Disembarking our river cruise in Amsterdam
Well the day was finally here – every amazing river cruise must come to an end and we definitely didn’t want to leave. The disembarkation process with AmaWaterways is so smooth and easy. You literally get up in the morning, have a full breakfast and leave your luggage out one hour prior to departure. The crew brings you luggage off the ship and when you are called you just walk off and your taxi or shuttle is waiting for you, depending on what you are doing after. We had 2 more days in Amsterdam so we just walked from the ship right to our hotel.
We will post more about Amsterdam as a destination and all the things we got up to there (!) but I do want to recommend our Amsterdam hotel, the Room Mate Aitana in Amsterdam. This hotel is right on the outer portion of the canals, 10 minutes away from the train station and 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. We checked in early and anticipated not getting a room but after talking to the front desk staff they had upgraded us to a room with a view of the city AND a room that was available at 9am!
One of the wonderful features of this hotel is they give you a free wi-fi transponder you can take around the city with you that gives you unlimited wi-fi. All you do is put it in your pocket and connect your smart phone to it. It is FREE! All you do is sign one out (now if you lose it you have to pay for it but just keep it in your pocket / purse and you will be ok).
The rooms are trendy, modern and very comfortable. We were really pleased with this hotel. Downstairs is a beautiful restaurant overlooking the waterfront as well.
Over the next two days we did the typical touristy things – sailed on a Canal boat for a guided tour, ate and drank our way through the many wonderful restaurants of this city and marvelled at how many times we almost got run over by bikes, cars and trams in this busy metropolis! We loved it 🙂
By the end of the two days we had been away from home almost 2.5 weeks and it was time to return… but we thoroughly enjoyed our river cruise and would 100% return on AmaWaterways again.
Why we recommend river cruising with AmaWaterways
Even though we are in our late 30s / early 40s we didn’t feel like this was a boring or sedentary vacation. On the contrary we were thoroughly exhausted by the end of trip. So I think the misconception that river cruising is only for “old” folk is incorrect. BUT River cruising is definitely different than ocean cruising and you can’t expect to have the same amenities onboard like pools, waterslides and multiple shows. What you CAN expect is world-class fine dining and service, included daily excursions and a wonderful intimate experience.
AmaWaterways definitely sets the standard in the quality of their staterooms and furnishings throughout the ship. We loved the accessibility of the Captain and Cruise Director – you just don’t get to have those interactions on an ocean cruise!
One of the best things is disembarking and not having a huge bill at the end of your trip – almost everything is included in your fare so you don’t feel like you will be returning home to a huge credit card bill!!
We would definitely recommend the AmaStella and AmaWaterways to anyone looking to cruise through Europe… but don’t forget you can also cruise with them through Asia and Africa as well. Take a look at all of their itineraries here and reach out to us below if you would like more information on how to book!
