Day 2 on AmaStella in Breisach, Germany
Every AmaWaterways river cruise offers multiple excursions each day for you to choose from.
The 3 tour options provided by AmaWaterways today included:
- A Panoramic bus ride through Riquewihr, France with a short walking tour and free time to explore the town. On most excursions they offer both a regular and gentle walking guide. The onboard Quietvox devices are amazing and so easy to use – you just touch your device to the “Lollipop” sign your guide is holding and you get synced to their voice right away. Great technology
- Freiburg, Germancy tour which included a bus tour and short walking tour through this town.
- Breisach Bike tour which is the tour we opted for today.
It was cloudy and dreary as we woke up so we thought we would burn off some of those calories we ate and drank last yesterday and take on the 25 km / 15 mile tour through a really cute and quaint wine-growing village called Burkheim and through the beautiful countryside and into the charming medieval village of Bickensohl. With only 5 people on this particular tour it felt very exclusive!
The bike ride was not difficult at all and the guides stop throughout the tour to talk about the surroundings and give some rest. We stopped at a winery in one of the villages to sample some wine along the way as well!
It’s so hard to imagine that this town was founded in the 1300’s… and in some ways many of the buildings and culture have been preserved.
Of course there is always time for a little wine tasting, sit down at a cafe and local shopping.
We slowly biked DOWNHILL towards the town of Breisach where we were docked… it is a leisurely pace and I would recommend the bike tours as a great way to see the beauty of these towns.
After returning we left our bikes with the staff and got on board for a wonderful lunch – complete with as much wine and beer as you like. That’s one of the best things about AmaWaterways… you can drink as much or as little as you want at every meal and the servers are happy to oblige!
By 1:45pm it was all board as we started our cruise to Strasbourg. If you are used to large ocean cruises you are in for a treat on a river cruise – the pace is smooth, sedentary and very very relaxing.
By 4pm they were searving tea in the lounge and at 5pm our cruise director, Marcia held her daily briefing on what was on the program for the next day. Even if you had chosen your excursions in advance this gave everyone a chance to review their choices and decide if they maybe wanted to changes things up for the next day. Such flexibility was another reason river cruising is such a relaxing experience – no waiting down at the shore ex desk for hours!
Dinner was wonderful as usual and was followed up with more dancing, drinks and fun in the lounge with the talented Enrico Novi! Sleep came easily to us after all that activity today 🙂
