AmaStella in Cologne, Germany
One of the best things about river cruising is that you often get to overnight in spectacular destinations. You are often free to come and go into the towns and villages as you please. Last night we overnighted in Lahnstein and we woke up to beautiful clear skies. But by 6:30 it was all aboard and we were already off to Cologne!
We had more time on deck to enjoy the sunny skies and see a few more castles along the way! By 12:00pm we were ready for lunch and then it was time to disembark as we had arrived in Cologne!
Choosing today’s excursion was a bit difficult as we wanted to do all three! On offer were:
- A Cologne walking tour and cathedral visit – this was a 1 hour walking tour of Cologne before entering the Cathedral with a 45 minute tour inside the Cathedral.
- A Kolsch Beer and Local Specialties tour which was a 1 hour tour through the city and into Gaffel am Dom to try the specialty beer of the city – Kolsch, along with Reibekuchen.
- Guided Bike tour of Cologne
We opted for the walking tour which was wonderful – did you know that Cologne is the 4th largest city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich?)
It is very popular with tourists and we saw tons of young adults loving the beer gardens, parks, restaurants and bars. It’s also a very culture city with over 30 museums and hundreds of galleries.
Part of our tour also included a tour of the Cologne Cathedral which is a catholic cathedral. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. It is also one of the most visited landmarks in Germany, averaging 20,000 people per day. Inside the Cathedral are beautiful stained glass windows. But the main centre of worship is the Shrine of the Three Kings – traditionally believed to contain the bones of the Biblical Magi or the Three Wise Men.
After the tour we got to spend some time strolling the immense shopping avenue and explore the many beer gardens. It was such a great afternoon and we made sure to try out a few versions of Kolsch along the way!
We returned to the ship in the late afternoon and it was so warm that some of our friends were enjoying the beautiful pool on the top deck. We had some drinks and just took in the site of Cologne from our ship. Tonight we got to celebrate the crew at the Farewell Cocktail and Captains Farewell Gala Dinner served in the main dining room. Everyone looked amazing and it was great to see all the crew and thank them for a wonderful week.
All aboard was 6:45pm as we would be sailing through the night towards our final destination – Amsterdam!
