More and more travellers are including children, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins on trips. In our fast paced and hectic world, a family vacation that brings together multi-generations is a wonderful way for everyone to re-connect with each other. At My Way Holiday we help families create that once in a lifetime vacation without the hassle of having one person coordinate all the travel, take the payments, manage credit cards and find a destination that will work for everyone.
Here are some tips on booking a multi-generational travel vacation:
Choose a travel agent
You KNEW we were going to say that! But having a travel agent act as a point person just make sense. He/she will help you choose a destination and then can coordinate with all your family members to book flights, accommodations, transfers etc. This is especially important if you have family flying and travelling from all over the country. Want to have a pre-night get together at a hotel? The travel agent can coordinate that! What about a special meal at the resort that is just reserved for you and your family? Again, the agent has tools and contacts to make that happen.
Get everyone involved
It may seem like common sense but there is always that family member that says “I don’t care where we go… just book it” Well normally they are the ones complaining because they didn’t have a say. If you have contact information for your family, ask your agent to send out a pool or informal facebook group where everyone can communicate ideas and come to a consensus.
Make sure the vacation has something for everyone
Most agents can ensure that your vacation caters to all members of you family and will help organize excursions or activities that everyone can participate in but keep in mind that some destinations just may not be suitable for all ages or interests (i.e. Europe may seem like a wonderful idea but it may not work so well when visiting museums with 3 children under 2 or walking the cobblestone roads of Florence if a grandparent has a mobility issue).
No vacation is every perfect. The sooner you set aside that notion the more easily you will breathe and enjoy your trip. There will be hiccups along the way but your travel agent will have you well prepared and will be available when there are issues. Also, don’t cram too much into a multi generational vacation. We recommend vacations no longer than 2 weeks.
Pack lighter and share
You are all family… so don’t pay huge luggage fees when you can share the load. Sweaters, hair straighteners, tweezers, first aid kits – you probably only need one of all of these items! Decide who will bring what and plan ahead.
Our last tip for making the most out of a multi generational trip?
Take moments to appreciate all the family members that took this journey with you. Take lots of photos and videos – who knows when you will all be together again. This may be, literally, the vacation of a lifetime. so enjoy every moment!
